Nursery Assistant Job Description
Reports to: Nursery Attendant
Status: Part Time
Pay Rate/Hours: $17.46/hour with guarantee of two (2) hours each Sunday. Pending budget approval for 2026, hours may increase to 3 hours/Sunday when learning hour/faith formation is provided.

Job Summary: Assists Nursery Attendant with providing childcare for infant and young children during worship services at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Pending budget approval, position may also expand to covering learning/faith formation hour as well as worship services. In cases where the Nursery Attendant cannot be present, an additional volunteer – a teen 13 years or older or an adult - will also assist with supervision when children are present.
Essential Functions:
- Assist with creating a welcoming environment

- Maintain a safe, clean, well-organized nursery environment.
- Have the nursery ready to receive children fifteen minutes before the start of the worship service
- Engage children in creative play, songs, and stories
- Provide food and drinks when appropriate to children following guidelines from parents/caregivers
- Change diapers and assist children with all aspects of toileting, as needed
- Assist with creating and maintaining a safe environment

- Receive children from parents/caregivers and return children to parents/caregivers using established security policies
- Clean up spills and other messes in a timely fashion
- Monitor the condition of nursery equipment and supplies and take steps to remove any damaged or unsafe items.
- Adhere to any dietary restrictions/guidelines as reported by parents/caregivers
- Following the worship service, clean the nursery area and sanitize the toys

Minimum Qualifications
- Eighteen years of age
- Experience caring for infants and young children
- Ability to pass a nationwide criminal background check
- Demonstrate working knowledge of the Heimlich maneuver on infants and children
- Become CPR and first aid certified, if not already.
- Use of professional etiquette in all interactions
- Ability to work effectively with others including staff, volunteers, congregation members, guests
- Ability to work independently
